  • Video I 『熊人內經圖-都市熊之舞- | Bear-Human Neijingtu: Dance of the Urban Bear』
  • Video II 『內在黑熊歸山訓練 | Training to Return the Inner Black Bear to the Mountain』

This installation, consisting of videos and poster work (photography and drawings), was created out of an interest in the Neijingtu, a body diagram found in ancient Chinese medical texts, and against the backdrop of the recent increase in bears appearing in urban areas. Prompted by the question of whether our maps of the human body may need to be updated in response to this phenomenon, the project began by reinterpreting the Neijingtu as a framework for reconsidering the relationship between humans, bears, and the environments that connect them.

In the Neijingtu (Chart of the Inner Landscape), the human body is depicted as a landscape resembling a traditional mountain-water painting. In this work, the city, the satoyama (the transitional zone between human settlement and wilderness), and the deep mountains inhabited by bears are reimagined as a single body and reconstructed as the Bear-Human Neijingtu.

The “inner bear” that appears within this body is neither simply a bear nor a human, nor is it an imaginary being. If environmental and bodily changes are understood as mutually responsive, the inner bear may be recognized as a phenomenon through which the relationship between humans and their environment manifests itself within the body.

Through the Neijingtu, this work seeks to reconsider the relationship between the human body and the environment, and through the inner bear, to explore that relationship as a lived bodily experience.

Furthermore, viewing the traditional Neijingtu alongside 熊人內經圖 may open up additional layers of interpretation. Viewers are encouraged to consult the traditional Neijingtu in parallel with this work. The project continues to develop through an ongoing exploration of this point.

-Video II: Training to Return the Inner Black Bear to the Mountain

Drawing on concepts from East Asian medicine, the project approaches both bear behavior and contemporary social change as bodily phenomena. For example, the increasing presence of bears in urban areas is reread through the relationships among the city (head), the satoyama (spleen), and the deep mountain (kidney), allowing ecological relations between humans and their environment to be reconsidered through the metaphor of the body.

Video I presents an urban bear wandering through the city. Based on the principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Phases, the work translates the Neijingtu into the movements and rhythms of a bear. Its choreography draws from Taiwanese and Chinese lion dance traditions*. The bear wanders through a district known for its concentration of traditional Chinese medicine shops, appearing to search among medicinal materials as if attempting a form of self-medication within a disrupted ecological system.  (*The lion dance referenced in this work was also a form of folk performance that, during the Japanese colonial period, served as a cover for martial arts training, allowing Taiwanese people to preserve skills of self-defense despite restrictions on martial practices.
)

Video II presents a series of bodily exercises based on the Bear-Human Neijingtu. The work explores ways of engaging with the “inner bear” that inhabits the human body and proposes a speculative training method for returning it to the mountain. While the restoration of satoyama environments has also been emphasized in contemporary discussions of human-bear relations, this work focuses on the spleen, associated with the satoyama, and the kidney, associated with the mountain. The movements are informed by research into qigong and other traditional body practices intended to nourish these functions. The soundtrack is composed from rhythmic structures derived from the trigrams associated with the spleen and kidney in the Bagua system.
